Gunkholing around Great Barrier Island

Very calm today so we motored out of Shoal Bay North up the west coast of the island. Soon came across whales, they were whales for sure this time, absolutely amazing to be so near them.

Little Barrier was to the north west and I spent some time starting to get the hang of navigation, triangulating etc etc.

We decided to go into Whangaparapara Harbour and into the southern Rapid bay, a small bay tucked in behind the entrance to the harbour.

I almost felt like going for a swim, knowing that motoring had heated up the water for a shower afterwards but the sight of a red algal bloom made me think twice, at least that is my excuse. I mean it is 1 August so nearly Spring. I don’t know what caused the bloom, yes they are quite normal but it seemed a bit odd in this isolated place at this time of year. The Harbour had previously had a copper mine and we wondered whether that was a link, maybe. There had also been a whaling station here, clearly the whales knew that had long gone.

After settling in we went fishing in the dinghy, tried out the new rod, without success. Clearly a little practice and a matter of time and it will be fresh fish for dinner. Again the whales were huffing and blowing a couple of hundred metres away, fantastic sunset and back to Anyway for that long awaited shower.
